The long-haired deer of mortimer forest

Among the most remarkable inhabitants of the estate are the long-haired fallow deer of Mortimer Forest. This rare species is unique to the area likely because the population was isolated and a gene mutation has occurred. First noted in the 1950s, they have developed a hairier, curlier coat than the usual fallow deer. Rarely seen, there is something magical about knowing you are immersed in nature with these shy majestic creatures.

Mosses and microhabitats

Downton Estate is home to 122 different species of moss, thriving in the estate’s humid ecosystems. One of these moss species is exclusive to the River Teme, highlighting the estate’s exceptional biodiversity and the delicate balance of its habitats.

River life: otters and dippers

The River Teme, which winds gracefully through the estate, supports a thriving population of otters and dippers. These species are indicators of a healthy river ecosystem and contribute to the dynamic biodiversity that makes Downton Estate so special.
